Minimum Permissions Required to Use All Features of the Software

To use all features in the Shogun A/B Testing app, your Shopify staff account needs specific permissions. Even if you have access to the app itself, Shopify may still block specific actions, such as creating a theme test, if your staff permissions are too limited.

This article outlines the exact Shopify permissions you need to ensure everything works smoothly.

Why Permissions Matter

Shogun A/B Testing interacts with your Shopify themes, products, and storefront data.

If your Shopify account doesn’t have the required access, you may experience:

  • Errors when creating a theme test
  • Missing or disabled theme-related options
  • Tests not applying to products
  • Unexpected or generic error messages

Making sure your staff permissions are set correctly will prevent these issues.

Required Shopify Permissions

To fully use Shogun A/B Testing, ensure your staff account has the following permissions enabled.

Online Store (Required)

You must have Online Store access with all of the following options turned on:

  • Themes
  • Edit code (including generating theme blocks)
  • Blog posts and pages

These permissions allow Shogun to duplicate themes, create test variations, and publish updates as part of a theme test.

Products (Required)

You need the ability to view and modify products so Shogun can apply test templates to product groups.

Make sure these product permissions are enabled:

  • View
  • View cost
  • Create and edit

Markets (Required)

Shogun does not require full Markets access, but you must have at least:

  • View

This allows Shogun to read product availability and sales channel settings during test creation.

Content (Required)

Shogun uses content assets, including files and metaobjects, when generating or modifying themes for tests.

Make sure the following Content permissions are enabled:

Metaobjects

  • View

Entries

  • View

Files

  • View
  • Create
  • Edit

These allow Shogun to properly read and manage theme assets and content dependencies during test creation and theme duplication.

How to Update Your Permissions

If you don’t have the required access:

  1. Ask your Shopify store owner or admin to open Settings → Users and Permissions
  2. Select your staff account
  3. Enable the permissions listed in this guide
  4. Save the changes
  5. Log out and log back in to refresh your access

Troubleshooting

If you still run into issues after updating your permissions:

  • Double-check that Themes under Online Store is enabled
  • Confirm you have access to the Shogun A/B Testing app
  • Retry the action and note the exact time if an error occurs
  • Contact Shogun support with this information so we can help investigate

Additional Notes

  • When Shogun is installed, the store grants the app all required scopes, but individual staff accounts still need the correct Shopify permissions to use those features.
